Used Cars Classifieds

In the past, used cars classifieds tended to be found in newspapers, so the amount of information available there was more limited. Thanks to the Internet, however, ads posted online can often contain a wealth of information, which you can use to already begin researching a specific vehicle for sale, without having to step out of the house.

Online used cars classifieds tend to contain certain pieces of information, which you should use to your full advantage. Here is a number to keep in mind.

1. Make full use of the images posted.

Well, this one is pretty obvious, but there is a number of things to keep in mind. Some ads may not have any pictures at all which is pretty inconvenient, but in certain cases, you can ask the seller to email or send images of the car to you, so that you can view it without having to visit the place. Also, keep in mind that there is the chance that the images posted online aren’t those of the vehicle itself. So be sure to physically inspect the car before making a purchase.

2. Compare the mileage of different vehicles.

It doesn’t necessarily mean, of course, that a car with more mileage on it is necessarily superior to one that hasn’t been driven around as much. But you’ll find that, after you do a lot of research on used cars for sale by owner, that vehicles from a particular year will tend to have a certain average amount of mileage. So if you find a car that’s been driven a much farther distance compared to its peers, then it’ll probably be a good idea to ask some questions. And the same is true if you find a car that’s been driven much less than the average. That might point to regular breaking down, after all.

3. Use the VIN.

Many ads already indicated the used car’s VIN or vehicle identification number. This is a pretty useful piece of information because you can use it to more fully research a car. For instance, the National Insurance Crime Bureau has a database available, which people can use to find out more about whether the car has suffered from serious damage previously as well as other useful bits of information. So if the ad contains the VIN, then use it, and if it isn’t indicated then try asking the seller to provide it. You never know what you might find.

A last piece of advice is not to focus only on used cars classifieds. There are a lot of other alternatives to find good cheap used cars.
